Description: Pain is an international health issue and can cause severe physiological, psychological, and financial problems.  COSMOS considers pain management from the perspective of both current and future treatment options.  Currently, the Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management at the University of Texas Southwestern MedicalCenter at Dallas conducts a two-stage interdisciplinary pain management program that considers a wide variety of treatments.  We structure a decision-making process to generate adaptive treatment strategies for this two-stage program.  For the future of chronic pain managment, Drs. Chiao and Peng have developed the Integrative Sensor and Stimulator Implant (ISSI) System. The wireless ISSI System has a module to record single neuron activity from the spinal cord of a rat. Through a feedback algorithm, a trigger signal is sent to the stimulating module that stimulates the targeted brain area, such as the motor cortex. The stimulation of the motor cortex can decrease the nociceptive signals in the spinal cord, which can be interpreted as pain reduction.  COSMOS has used data mining tools to study the effect of the ISSI System.
